Die Stadt liegt an der gefährlichen San-Andreas-Spalte. Am 18. April 1906 erschütterte ein Beben die Küste Nordkaliforniens und zerstörte durch das anschließende Feuer große Teile der Stadt. Rund 3.000 Menschen kamen ums Leben, Dia-handcoloriert, aus Vortragsreihe: "Erdbeben und Vulkanismus"
